Week Six Reflection

It was a busy week with meetings.  I also have decided to try to do some combination of classes for my fifth period.  Right now I have two classes during that period.  I have a handful of kids in US government and then a few more in a psychology class.  Our new superintendent is interested in seeing more collaborative classes and I thought this would be an opportunity.  I am planning on having my government and psychology classes collaborate on a project looking at three main issues.

First is the issue of mass shootings.  I feel like this is a natural collaboration as I can have the kids who want psychology credit do some case studies of the perpetrators in the most recent mass shooting incidents in Las Vegas, San Bernardino and Orlando.  We can look at the commonalities between the perpetrators as well as the difficulties in identifying them beforehand.  We can also look at possible mental health diagnoses for these people and the statistics involved in mass shootings in the US.

The other two issues I want to tackle over the next few weeks are heath care, especially as it relates to mental illness and gerrymandering (which will have a more tenuous link to psychology but I thin we can do some interesting statistical analyses.

For the government students, we will be looking at both the legislative possibilities as well as the constitutional issues both for gun rights and for privacy with regard to mental illness.

For the purposes of this class, what I am trying to do is find some apps that will help the class curate some information for these projects.  I know I saw some things that might be useful when I was writing some of my other assignments but I cannot find the specific ones I had in mind for the life of me.  I am looking for something that will allow students to simultaneously share slide on my whiteboard.  Any suggestions from any of you would be greatly appreciated.  Right now I am thinking of using Google Slides, but I am not sure how well that will work.

  1. Hi Bill,
I wish I could be a "fly on the wall" and listen in to the discussions that your student's have regarding their findings of the commonalities of the mass shooters. The case studies should be quite intriguing and an excellent learning experience for your students. Good for you for tackling this!
For slide sharing, have you looked into "Zoom" (https://zoom.us)? They have cross-platform sharing that may be helpful. I'm not sure if it will transfer to your white board though . If your white board is a "Smart Board," I think there is an option for the students to share their screens if they are paired with blue tooth.
I'll keep my eyes and ears open and if I hear of anything else, I'll pass it on.
